Spain’s ministry of agriculture has signed a new export agreement with Mexico for the opening of the North American market to Spanish stonefruit.
According to the Spanish authorities, the export protocol will enable the country’s stonefruit producers to both begin shipments to Mexico and broaden their opportunities for sales outside Europe.
The first shipments of fruit principally from the western Spanish region of Extremadura will take place from mid-June, following an inspection by a Mexican phytosanitary official.
In a statement, the Spanish ministry of agriculture said the new accord marked the culmination of 10 years of negotiations between Spain and Mexico to establish phytosanitary regulations, specifically concerning pest controls, that would enable stonefruit exports to begin.
