Mexican avocados

Talks to increase agricultural trade between Mexico and Australia took a step forward on Wednesday as agricultural officials from the two countries met in Paris.

Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Dr Mike Kelly met with Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) Francisco Mayorga Castañeda, reported Fresh Fruit Portal.

The two were in Paris for the inaugural G20 Agriculture Ministers meeting.

The meeting followed on from an April 2010 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mexico and Australia on trade opportunities.

Mexico is hoping to export pre-cut mangoes, Hass avocados, apples, plums, peaches, limes, table grapes and pomegranates to Australia.

The country’s avocados are currently being analysed by Australian authorities, and Mexico already has access to the Australian market for uncut fresh mangoes.

Mr Castañeda said the two countries could also share their experience with livestock breeding.
