The A.P. Møller-Maersk Group has announced that it has joined the World Ocean Council (WOC), in a bid to support global leadership and collaboration on ocean sustainability.
In its role on the Council, which is the only international organisation bringing together a wide range of ocean industries to address sustainable ocean use, Maersk said that it is supporting efforts to promote development and stewardship through collaboration across private sector industries.
'The Oceans are core to our activities in shipping and energy,' noted John Kornerup Bang, Lead advisor on climate & environment at Maersk. 'We are pleased to join this forum which provides an important collaborative platform for sustainable advancement.'
Paul Holthus, executive director of the WOC, welcomed Maersk to the alliance, noting that the group 'exemplifies the kind of commitment and leadership that is needed to tackle the complex challenges of ocean sustainability'.
Indeed, the Danish company's environmental strategy pledges to protect marine environments and biodiversity, and reducing the overall impact of operations at sea.
'The marine environment is fragile and we are determined to be good citizens of the world's oceans,' Kornerup Bang added. 'This partnership will help us go beyond regulatory standards and take a proactive approach.'
