The US is expected to present solid marketing conditions for the start of the Chilean Hass avocado deal as Mexican supply winds up and domestic production falls short.
“A very strong US market is predicted at the beginning of the season in comparison to last year when there was a high domestic avocado crop,” Chilean Hass Avocado Committee president Adolfo Ochagavía told Fruitnet.com.
“Prices are high because the US crop is low this year, plus the Mexican season has ended and their second flowering doesn’t deliver a big volume. Chile doesn’t have a massive crop but we expect a good season.”
The US is due to receive 77,110 tonnes of Chilean Hass avocados during 2011/12, according to the committee.
Global exports from the South American nation should be in the region of 120,000 tonnes, in comparison with the 88,000 tonnes shipped last season (2010/11).
Demand for the fruit continues to grow in the US, and the committee sees much potential to grow presence in certain areas of the market where Chilean Hass avocados are not as heavily supplied as other states.
