Blueberries

The US market can expect to receive its first Argentinean blueberries of the season in September as members of the Argentinean Blueberry Committee (ABC) begin exporting by air through December.

Flown directly to stores via the newly launched “blueberry route”, Argentina’s blueberries will mark the first off-season berries to reach the US market, extending the availability of fresh fruit from autumn into winter.

In the past five years, Argentina’s blueberry exports to the US have tripled and ABC expects a good harvest for the 2011/12 season, according to a press release from the association.

“We are working with our exporters to provide US buyers with timely crop information, including volume projections, updates on weather and growing conditions and status of production and shipments,” explained ABC manager Inés Peláez.

The first pre-season crop report will be distributed on 30 August – providing projected volumes by growing region, destination and time of arrival–followed by a second report on 25 September.

The majority of Argentinean-grown blueberries enter the US through Miami and this year ABC will participate at the PMA Fresh Summit trade show as part of a national Argentinean pavilion (booth #4847).

ABC was founded in 2008 to establish new standards of quality and safety and expand Argentina’s blueberry exports globally.
