The sub-tropical state of Formosa in north-eastern Argentina is set to be the location of an ambitious agricultural programme designed to supply a range of tropical fruits to both the domestic and international markets, according to a local press report.
Supported by the regional government of Formosa and the University of Formosa, some 18,000ha will be planted mainly with bananas, as well as pineapples, papayas and possibly mangoes.
Initially, the fruit will be used to supply the local market but the project’s coordinators hope to establish a dynamic fruit industry in the region which will eventually be in a position to export fruit overseas.
Formosa, located on the banks of the Paraguay River, has a humid sub-tropical climate, with average temperatures of 28 °C in summer and 16 °C in winter.
