Following a long negotiation process, the Peru-Japan (Free Trade Agreement) is expected to take effect at the brining of 2012, according to Luis Helguero, Peru’s commercial attaché in Japan.

Tatsuya Ishida, director general of Jetro Perú (the Japan External Trade Organization), said the deal is set to benefit Peruvian fruits, vegetables and grains as well as organic products, reported Agraria.pe.

In particular, Ishida highlighted the huge potential for Peruvian mango exports due to the consumer purchasing power in Japan.

Ishida also pointed out the high demand in Japan for top-quality and certified products, the report said.

Peru exported US$25.2-worth of agricultural products to Japan during the first half of 2011, of which mangoes represented US$4.9m, asparagus US$3.2m, bananas US$3.1m, among other items, according to Agrodata.
