Apple growers across New York counties in the US could be eligible for aid following the hailstorm that hit the region in June this year.

The summer storm, which hit on the 16 June, has meant that fresh apple volumes could be down by over 30 per cent, according to The Packer. Other crops affected by the hail include sweet and storage onions, sweetcorn and other vegetable crops.

A United States Department of Agriculture release on 15 August said that 17 New York counties had been declared disaster areas as a result of the hailstorm, The New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets reported.

The counties include Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Eries, Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Orange, Orleans, Rockland, Schoharie, Ulster, Wayne and Westchester.
