The demand for produce packaging in the US is forecast to climb by 4.2 per cent to US$4.7bn by 2012, according to a new survey by market researcher The Freedonia Group.

The study, entitled 'Produce Packaging', predicts that growth will outpace overall food packing, boosted by an increase in produce production and future growth in consumer spending.

Additionally, Freedonia highlighted an increase in demand for fresh-cut produce and heightened awareness of healthy eating as further reasons for a possible increase.

According to canplastics.com, the study also noted that plastic containers could experience the biggest gains in the future, as a result of an increase in berry production and expanding applications for clamshells, bowls and other varieties.
