Mangoes

Peruvian mango exports rose by 71.6 per cent in value during the first seven months of this year to US$154m, according to figures from the national exporters association (Adex), with the bulk of the crop headed to the Northern Hemisphere.

The US and the Netherlands received a massive 74 per cent of volumes during the January to July period, Adex said, with shipments to the US worth some US$33.19m in value, and sales to the Netherlands not far behind at US$25.18m.

Other export markets included the UK (which received 7 per cent of the total crop), Canada (with 4 per cent), Spain, Japan and Belgium (which each received 3 per cent of volumes), France (2 per cent), Chile, Germany, New Zealand, Mexico and Sweden (which each received 1 per cent), among others.

According to Adex, Peru is on course to increase export volumes during the 2008/09 marketing season, which gets underway in December through March.

Peru mainly exports Kent mangoes to international markets, as well as Tommy Atkins and Haden albeit in smaller volumes.
