Daniella mango label from Mexico

A vast number of importer-distributors and retailers across the US and Canada have issued recalls over the weekend for whole and fresh-cut fruit containing Daniella-branded mangoes from Agrícola Daniella in Sinaloa, northern Mexico.

The widespread recall is due to the threat of salmonella braenderup contamination, according to news statements from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A total of 105 people from 16 US states have been infected with the outbreak strain and reported to PulseNet since 1 July 2012.

Although no deaths have been reported, of that total 25 people have been hospitalised, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In Canada there have also been several confirmed illnesses, reportedly around 80 cases, associated with the consumption of the mangoes, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said.

Following a voluntary recall by US importer Splendid Products, Ahold-owned retailer Shop and Stop has announced the removal of Daniella mangoes from sale and issued a recall.

Fellow retailer Bi-Lo has announced a recall of Daniella mangoes sold in its stores located in the states of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Winn-Dixie, a subsidiary of the Bi-Lo supermarket chain, has recalled fresh-cut fruit produced by the Renaissance Food Group – including Garden Highway-branded Tropical Salsa and Fruit Burst as well as Island Medley varieties of fresh-cut fruit sold under the Winn-Dixie name.

The Winn-Dixie recall is only for products sold in central and southern Florida stores.

Florida-based fresh-cut fruit processor World Foods, meanwhile, has also recalled its cut fruit and salsa products that contain Daniella mangoes.

Taylor Farms of New Jersey is also voluntarily recalling specific code dates of products containing Daniella-branded mangoes or items potentially processed on common equipment with the tainted fruit.

Pacific Coast Fruit Company of Portland, Oregon, is voluntarily recalling multiple types of fresh-cut processed items distributed to various retailer groceries in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska.

Pacific Coast Fruit said it is recalling the products after using a portion of the mangoes that were recalled by Splendid Products marked with the Daniella label in some of its fresh cut processed items.

The recall includes products distributed to Wawa retail stores in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Ready Pac Foods of California said it also is voluntarily recalling “out of an abundance of caution” packaged fruit products containing Daniella mangoes provided by supplier Splendid Products.

Canada Safeway, an importer of Ready Pac products in Calgary, Canada, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace.

Longstanding Canadian importer Catania in Ontario has also warned the Canadian public not to consume Catania-branded mangoes after distributing Daniella-branded mangoes in Newfoundland and Ontario, and possibly other provinces too.

Sobeys Canada and Sunterra Market are also recalling Daniella mangoes and products containing the fruit.

Seattle’s Triple B Corporation, operating under the name Real Foods Kent, and Charlie’s Produce in Anchorage, Alaska, have revealed that they are recalling 1,336 cases of products sold in retail stores and delis in Washington and Alaskabecause they contain Daniella mangoes.

The outbreak was first reported in Canada on 24 August when CFIA and Vancouver importer-distributor North American Produce Sales warned the public not to consume Daniella-branded mangoes from Mexico.

Last week a number of Canadian companies recalled the fruit, including Ontario-based importer Mex Y Can Trading and Canada-based retailer Giant Food of Landover.

The fruit was then suspected as being the source of a similar salmonella outbreak in the US, prompting California-based fresh produce distributor Splendid Products to recall Daniella mangoes on 29 August.
