Agrícola Famosa has acquired new melon production land and farms in Brazil in order to widen its offer to a year-round basis.

As a result of the purchase, the Brazilian melon giant will now produce fruit across a total area of 25,000ha divided across several zones.

“More and more worldwide clients asked us to also supply them with melons in the spring, plus we see that the internal market in Brazil is growing every year,” explained Carlo Porro, owner of the Brazilian supplier.

Following several tests and positive feedback from its clients, Agrícola Famosa will plant the new growing areas for next season.

The production will allow the company to supply melons during March, April and May, according to Porro.

Agrícola Famosa’s Dutch partner Frankort & Koning has lent a hand in the developments and believes it could greatly impact the melon market in the near future, particularly for Yellow Honeydew, Piel de Sapo and watermelons.

“We saw that the short transit time, combined with their experience and expertise, just gives the best melons for our markets in this period of the year, where normally consumption is far higher than in winter months,” says F&K’s Leon van den Hombergh.
