Americafruit has learnt that Mexican lime giant the San Gabriel group has opened an import and sales office in Texas, the US, to handle all of the company’s fresh produce supply into the US and Canada.

The new business was inaugurated at the end of September and currently employs two people, a spokesperson for San Gabriel told Americafruit.

“The team in Texas will manage limes to start with before dealing with other products, but the bulk of the volume will be limes,” the spokesperson revealed.

The move to develop a foot on the ground in the US follows the huge success of San Gabriel’s UK and European import and sales arm which was established in the UK during 2009.

“We have a good structure now in the UK and San Gabriel wants to replicate that in the US,” the spokesperson said.

San Gabriel believes its Texan business has the potential to be even more successful than its UK division since the lime market is much bigger in the US than in Europe.

The full report will be published in the December/January issue of Americafruit Magazine.
