Following an initial recall at the end of July, California-based Wawona Packing is further extending its recall of plums, peaches, pluots and nectarines shipped from its warehouses in Cutler over fears of Listeria contamination.

The group is expanding its recall to include products packed in its facilities between 1 June and 17 July.

'The recalled products include the following brands marketed to consumers: Sweet 2 Eat, Sweet 2 Eat Organic, Mrs. Smittcamp's, and are also packed in private labels,' the FDA said in a statement. 'These brands will be on the boxes or on the stickers placed on individual fruit. Anyone who has the recalled products in their possession should not consume them and should discard them.'

Consumers who purchased any of the affected products are being advised to discard them and wash their hands with soap and warm water after handling the fruit, as well as disinfecting anything that came into contact with the fruits with a mild bleach solution. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures.

Wawona admitted that it did not know the exact destinations of stores that received the products from their direct customers, while retailers including Walmart, Costco and Whole Foods have warned consumers over the possible contamination.
