The Uruguayan government says it has been “assured” that its citrus will be able to enter the Chinese market, pending the conclusion of discussions on the treatment protocol.

Inocencio Bertoni, director of agricultural services at the ministry of agriculture, fisheries and livestock (MGAP), told El Observador that once technical issues relating to the cold treatment of the fruit during transportation have been resolved.

Bertoni said some containers had already been shipped to China, which represented an important alternative market for Uruguay within the framework of the strategic plan for the citrus industry.

“The future of Uruguayan citrus does not end with the opening of the US market, the industry has to keep on growing,” he said, adding that plans to add a further 4,000-5,000ha of production were already underway.
