The Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture (Minag) has announced an 11.1 per cent rise in agricultural production during the month of August, with growth lead primarily by asparagus, potatoes, rice, maize and coffee.

In the fresh produce category, conventional potatoes volumes rose by 7.2 per cent, Minag said, while the sweet potato crop grew by 71 per cent, followed by onions (up 101.4 per cent) and tomatoes (up 16 per cent).

Between January and August this year, Peru’s production of potatoes rose by 8.3 per cent, while mango volumes rose by an impressive 119.5 per cent during the same period.

The mango crop rose primarily in the northern Peruvian regions of Lambayeque, which registered a 198 per cent hike in volumes, and Piura, where production rose by 167.5 per cent.

Asparagus producers, meanwhile, recorded a solid crop increase of 21.1 per cent during January to August, due mainly to an expansion of planted area and improved production methods in terms of technology.

In terms of regions, production of the vegetable increased by 75.4 per cent in áncash, 51.1 per cent in Lima, 23.8 per cent in Ica and 13.1 per cent in La Libertad.
