Soreli kiwifruit Italy

The first ever variety of yellow-fleshed kiwifruit to be developed entirely in Italy has been unveiled by researchers at the University of Udine.

Soreli, named after the Friulian dialect word for sun, was selected at the end of last year as a potentially marketable new kiwifruit strain.

Following years of selection activity carried out by Professor Raffaele Testolin and Dr Guido Cipriani of the University's Department of Agrarian and Environmental Science, the new variety of Actinidia chinensis has now been licensed for commercial production.

Those looking to produce Soreli are not part of a club system but must pay a royalty.

According to the developers, Soreli offers larger sizes and earlier harvesting than Hort16A and Jintao, the two major yellow-fleshed kiwifruit varieties currently on major developed markets.

Hort16A is marketed as Zespri Gold, while Jintao is sold under the Jingold brand.

Soreli's developers also point out that the new variety is distinctive in terms of its shape and the colour of its skin and flesh.

Soreli can apparently be harvested around 30 days earlier than Hayward.
