The Free Fruit for Kids programme is being introduced at all 169 Giant-Landover stores in the US, according to a spokesperson from parent company Ahold-Delhaize, as well as its Stop & Shop, Giant-Carlisle and Martin’s stores.

The stores will now offer a free piece of fruit for children under ten during each shopping trip, a report from Supermarket News revealed.

The programme initially concerns bananas before moving to mandarin oranges later this autumn, with stores using in-store signs and produce displays to promote the programme.

“Giant is always pleased to provide opportunities for healthy eating, whether it’s at home or in the store,” said Lisa Coleman, lead nutritionist for Giant-Landover. “This programme is one more way Giant helps children consume enough fruits and vegetables, further emphasising our commitment to helping customers of all ages eat well and make healthy choices for themselves and their families.”
