The US Port of Oakland has recorded its first double-digit growth in exports since February.
The West Coast port’s September containerised export volume grew 10 per cent compared to the same period in 2015 – it’s eighth increase in nine months.
“Exports make up more than 50 per cent of our overall cargo volume,” said Port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll. “So the continued growth in September shows we’re playing pretty well to our strength.”
Oakland is the leading export port for Asia from the US West Coast, with the increase in export volume attributed to California growers’ boost in fruit, nut and wine shipments to Asia.
While overall cargo volume increased 2.7 per cent last month, import volume fell 4.2 per cent, the port reported.
