The Port of Los Angeles has moved its third largest container volume for October, however, last month’s haul of 748,762 TEUs was still an 8.1 per cent decrease compared to last year’s record-breaking October.
Loaded imports during October 2017 came in at 383,385 TEUs, down 8.1 per centcompared to October 2016. Loaded exports decreased 13.3 per cent to 144,209 TEUs, while there was a 4.2 per cent drop in empty container traffic (748,762 TEUs).
During the last quarter of 2016, the port handled additional cargo after the Hanjin bankruptcy crisis.
Ten months through 2017, overall cargo volumes are 7,639,756 TEUs, an increase of 6.4 per cent compared to the same period in 2016.
The performance puts the Port of Los Angeles on track to be the first port in the Western Hemisphere to move 9m TEUs in a year.
“In October, the good men and women of the ILWU moved 24,308 TEUs off and back on the Maersk Evora at APM Terminals in Los Angeles, which is believed to be a world record for a single vessel port call,” said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka.
“It’s that kind of efficiency and productivity that our supply chain partners have come to expect and deserve.”
