The California kiwifruit crop is forecast to pack-out at just 5.5m tray equivalents (3.2 kg) in 2008, which if correct would make this the shortest crop in more than 20 years.

A combination of a frost that hit in April followed by a heat wave in May appears to be the culprit for the decrease in volumes.

Fruit size is peaking on count 39s through to 45s, with a second but smaller peak between count 33s and 30s, according to industry sources.

Large fruit is reportedly very short in supply this year, but brix levels are said to be running extremely high.
