Hamburg Süd has announced it has added remote container management (RCM) technology to all of its reefer container shipments with immediate effect.

RCM monitors parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, and the concentrations of O2 and CO2 within the reefer container in real time.

This allows Hamburg Süd’s customers to use this data to monitor their supply chain with the aim of increasing efficiency and reliability and finding potential cost savings.

In recent months Hamburg Süd has carried out test shipments and developed the digital customer interface.

The online application can be accessed via PC, tablet or smartphone, and displays all important parameters of the refrigerated container including information on ports of departure and destination, container numbers and vessel name.

It also notifies customers and Hamburg Süd’s operations team if settings are deviating from standard parameters so that they can take any measures necessary to safeguard the quality of the cargo.

Frank Smet, chief commercial officer of Hamburg Süd, said this will help the company meet personalised shipping requirements.

“With RCM, we are combining the best of both worlds for our reefer customers: digital state-of-the-art technology, which is already tailored as much as possible to individual requirements, in addition to a personal service that can be accessed at any time,” said Smet.
