Nunhems has announced plans to expand its US facilities in Parma, Idaho, through an impressive US$20m investment project, which will include the construction of new seed processing and storage facilities.
“This investment lays the foundation for the sustainable growth of our vegetable seed business in the US and worldwide,” commented Dr. Joachim Schneider, head of the BioScience Business Unit at Bayer CropScience, the parent company of Nunhems.
“The objective of the expansion of our seed production in the US is to efficiently meet the needs of our customers in the future,” Dr. Schneider added in a statement.
The site in Parma, Idaho, processes more than 80 per cent of the global carrot and onion seeds produced by Nunhems for distribution among customers in the US and worldwide.
In addition to the recent purchase of 11ha adjacent to the Parma facility, Nunhems plans to build new seed processing and storage facilities, according to CEO Douwe Zijp.
“Furthermore, we will implement technical upgrades in equipment as well as other improvements,” Mr Zijp added. “During this process we will do everything possible to minimize any disruption in our day to day activities.
The site expansion will also lead to the extension of administrative functions and other departments including logistics, customer service, marketing & sales and quality assurance.
Nunhems operates a network of seed production locations in all US western states as well as research facilities in Brooks (Oregon) and Bakersfield, Lodi, Davis and Salinas (California).
