Chile-based supermarket operator D&S has announced that it will open its first stores in neighbouring Peru during 2009.

The retailer will launch modern warehouse-style units under the Superbodega Acentua banner in the country, instead of the more traditional supermarket format, Reuters reported.

'The idea is to start probably with three units...we think it's a good opportunity,' group CEO Enrique Ostale said at a meeting for business leaders in Santiago. 'They'd be located in lower-to-middle income sectors.'

The group had looked at expanding in South America through its proposed merger with Falabella earlier in the year, but the deal fell through after being denied antitrust approval.
