cantaloupe

Raleigh, US-based fresh produce grower-shipper L&M companies has issued a recall of one lot of whole cantaloupe melons following the discovery of a salmonella-contaminated fruit at a small farm.

The whole cantaloupes were sold between 10-15 May 2009 in Walmart Supercenter stores in North and South Carolina, and at a similar store in South Hill, Virginia, with consumers urged to destroy any of these melons that they may have purchased.

'L&M Companies takes food safety seriously, and we are committed to the shoppers who buy our products everyday,' said Mike McGee, vice-president of production and grower development at the company. 'We are issuing this recall because we want to ensure that even the slightest risk to public health is minimised.'

No illnesses have been reported as a result of the find, L&M added, and the group is currently working with the US Food and Drug Administration to inform customers of the recall.

The group added that it has postponed shipments from the farm where the discovery was made while the grower investigates the cause of the contamination.
