US fresh produce group Sunkist has increased production of its Cara Cara orange variety this year as it looks to maintain its majority share (68-70 per cent) of the US market.

The fruit, which is also known as the Power Orange, has a pinkish-red flesh and is 'exceptionally sweet with a tangy, cranberry-like zing', according to the group.

'We actually receive calls from consumers each year looking for Cara Cara's in their general area,' said specialty variety manager Jim Meeks.

'The crop was up 20 per cent this year and we still experienced a lift in FOB pricing,' Mr Meeks noted. 'Even with the increased acreage each year, growers have continued to experience very good returns.'

He added that while the group was optimistic about the future of the variety, it must be careful to keep production in line with demand.
