Indian mangoes

India has seen mango exports increase substantially during the 2008/09 season, a result of improved quality in the crop and good work by promotional organisations.

Shipments of the fruit nearly doubled during the year, rising by 43.8 per cent on the previous year, minister of state for commerce and industry Jyotiraditya Scindia told Lok Sabha.

'There was a drop in mango exports during 2007/08 due to quality deterioration on account of vagaries in the weather, but in 2008/09 exports have picked up reflecting an increase of 43.8 per cent in quantity terms,' he said.

Mr Scindia added that the government was coordinating with export promotion agencies such as the Agricultural and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority (APEDA), by providing them with technical input and financial assistance.
