Guatemala secures new banana route

The Guatemalan banana trade has secured a new export route to the US West Coast via the Mexican Port of Chiapas, according to a report by Mexican publication Informador.

Fruit will be sourced from the southern coastal area of Guatemala, the Guatemalan Exporters Association (Agexport) said, where production complies with the food safety and sanitation standards required by the Mexican authorities.

Previously, Guatemalan bananas were shipped to California from the Port of Quetzal, but due to export issues (such as delays) Agexport sought to find an alternative route.

The new route will come into operation next year, Informador said.
