The Chilean Fruit Growers Federation (Fedefruta) will today (Wednesday 18 November) assemble an Extraordinary Board Meeting to discuss what steps the industry should take in the wake of the “violent” fall in the value of the US dollar.

“Fedefruta has called on Chile’s leading fruit trade associations to meet this afternoon with our advisers and a number of other special representatives to define the future action to be taken by Fedefruta,” the association said in a news release.

The future of Chile’s fruit sector is being “seriously” threatened, according to Fedefruta, as well as direct and indirect rural employment from the III to the X region, which represents more than 500,000 people.

The organisation added that the current exchange rate means Chile’s goal of realising its potential as a major food supplier (Chile Potencia Alimentaria) is turning into a “fallacy”.

According to Chilean news agency Portal Frutícola, the following associations have been invited to the meeting:
