Cameo apples

Leading US apple marketer Domex Superfresh Growers is optimistic about prospects for this year’s Cameo apple crop.

The Cameo variety was discovered in 1987, and is now among the most popular apples grown in Washington. It has bright red stripes over an orange background, and is characterised by its firm and crisp texture and by its aromatic flavour.

“This crop’s ideal sizing and increasing consumer awareness have really been the drivers this season,” said Domex marketing manager Loren Queen.

“The overall crop is peaking on size 80/88 with some lots peaking on 88/100 which is ideal for many markets and perfect in this year of jumbo-sized apples.”

“Retailers looking for smaller sized apples will find that Cameo is an ideal fit and a great value to their customers,” he said.

Domex is the industry leader in marketing the Cameo variety, and it also markets organic Cameos, which continue to rise in popularity even in these economically challenging times.

Last year organic apple volumes increased by 34 per cent across the US.
