Washington apples in crate

An update on fresh apple holdings in the US released by the US Apple Association has pegged this year's stocks at 94.8m bushels as of 1 December, down 9 per cent on the same period of 2008.

Volumes recorded on 1 December 2009 were down from the 103.8m bushels seen at the same stage last year, but were 3 per cent higher than the five-year average of 92.4m bushels, according to the Association.

Current holding levels are also above those seen in 2007, when 86.7m bushels were recoded on 1 December.

Total processing apple holdings stood at 38.3m bushels on 1 December this year, close to last year's 38.2m bushels, according to the Association.
