Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has announced that container volumes soared by 43 per cent year-on-year during the final six weeks of 2009, as a higher number of boxes were lifted across all major trade lanes.

For the period between 14 November 2009 and 25 December 2009, the Singapore-based group carried 312,000 FEU, up from the 218,100 FEU transported in the same period of 2008, Seatrade Asia Online reported.

However, average freight rates across all trades remained depressed, falling 25 per cent through the six-week period at US$2,189 per FEU, compared with US$2,921 in 2008.

For the whole of 2009, NOL reported on a 7 per cent drop in container volumes to 2.29 FEU, with yearly average freight rates across all trades down 25 per cent to US$2,286 per FEU.
