NOL APL ship

One of the world's largest shipping companies, Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), has reported a 63 per cent increase in container traffic for the six weeks to 5 February, compared with the same period in 2009.

A company report said it shipped the equivalent of 307,400 standard-sized containers in the period, compared to 188,400 last year.

The rise was attributed to higher volumes on all trade lanes and strong demand in the lead up to Chinese New Year on 14 February.

However, average revenue per container was down by 9 per cent on the same period, to US$2,417.

NOL reported a net loss of US$741m for 2009, compared to a US$83m profit in 2008. The company's total revenue for 2009 was down 30 per cent to US$6.5bn.
