Peruvian citrus exports are tipped to reach some 60,000 tonnes this year, worth an estimated US$50m, according to figures released by the Peruvian Citrus Growers Association (ProCitrus) and reported by news agency Andina.
The country’s citrus sector is currently overcoming some production issues and the lingering effects of the global financial crisis, said ProCitrus president Antonio Gainza.
Mr Gainza said the global citrus industry is anticipating a “great production” year with good prices – unlike the last two campaigns which were affected by shorter crops.
Peru’s projected volume of 60,000 tonnes would mark a significant improvement on the 46,000 tonnes exported last season.
Peruvian citrus exports are distributed on 27 markets worldwide, mainly Europe and the US.
Last year, China was added to the list, importing a sample shipment of 40 tonnes.
Mexico is also reportedly due to receive its first test container of Peruvian citrus this season. Depending on the results, the potential for tangelos in this market will be evaluated.
