First Fruits Broetje Orchards

US-based apple specialist Broetje Orchards has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Chairman's Award from NCSI Americas, based on its commitment and leadership in the areas of food safety and social responsibility.

The grower-shipper stood out as the 'clear winner' of the award, according to NCSI director of business development Ben Marchant, for not only its food safety record but for community philanthropy and social policies that go 'above and beyond' the industry standard.

'We are honoured to be recognised, but the true honour comes in serving other,' said the group's Ralph Broetje. 'Our values drive our choices and we believe that business does not have to thrive at the expense of the planet or its people, but can chart a course that provides all parties an opportunity to improve.

'NCSI provides us with a constant tool to measure our progress and find ways to improve the way we do business,' he added.

Global certification body NCSI is in the third year of handing out its Chairman's Award, which it presents annually with one award per continent.
