The improved quality and branding of Indian mangoes is seeing the fruit commanding increasingly higher prices in the lucrative US export market, the Financial Express has reported.
The construction of an irradiation treatment facility in the country to prevent pests and an increase in seafreight shipments is being credited for the rise.
According to India's Agricultural and Processed Foods Export Development Authority (APEDA), Indian mangoes fetched US$20 per 3.5 kg box last year, but that figure has risen by US$8 per box this season.
Traditionally exported to the Middle East, Indian mangoes are increasingly being seen in the US and UK. US officials say around 250 tonnes of Indian mangoes are currently shipped there each year, with the potential to double that amount.
India is the world's largest producer of mangoes, with annual yields estimated at around 12.5m tonnes, but the country only exports around 80-90,000 tonnes of the fruit.
