In the US, Democratic presidential candidate Barrack Obama has urged Tesco to meet union leaders following a request by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

In a letter sent to Tesco CEO Terry Leahy, Mr Obama is reported to have requested that the retailer meets union officials to clear up rights issues, pointing out that the group does recognise unions in the UK. 'It is in your interests to ensure the communities where you do business and the leaders in the industry are heard,' he said.

In a statement, Tesco said: 'We strongly believe that union membership s a matter of individual choice, and if our people want to join a union then they can and will. All the signs so far are that there is little interest in doing so.'
