Northwest cherries

Northwest Cherry Growers are enjoying some of the largest early-season variety cherries seen in recent years.

Indicators suggest shipments should peak around 25-28 June, meaning there will be plenty of supply in time for 4 July holiday period.

As of 22 June, 755,919 cartons of cherries had been shipped, up on the 2008 figure of 422,284 cartons to the same date, and 68 per cent of the crop is of size 10.5 row and larger.

Initially it was thought that the Rainier variety would be peaking earlier than normal, but the cool May weather now looks likely to see it peak around 11 July.
