APL Logistics has said that, contrary to fears of a slowdown, shipping volumes into the US are strengthening as the year progresses, DC Velocity reported.

Company president Jim McAdam also said retailers had not noticed a drop in demand through the October-November period, when volume usually slows in the lead-up to the holidays.

McAdam said APL Logistics is seeing a 25 per cent increase in import volumes from major US retailers compared to 2009 levels.

"What our customers are telling us is they don't see much of a slowdown" heading into the holiday period, Mr McAdam said.

Mr McAdam said the upswing in demand is putting strain on the liner's capacity to meet orders.

"The discourse has changed. Last year, it was all about cost reductions. Now, it's about finding more space, more capacity."

"We can't put enough capacity in the markets where the company operates the services," Mr McAdam said.

APL Logistics' revenues for the first quarter reached US$296m, up 23 per cent on the same period in 2009.
