Maersk Line - Elly Maersk

Danish shipping giant Maersk Line has teamed with Lloyd's register to deliver what is claimed to be the first vessel-by-vessel carbon footprint assessment, which it will make available to its customers.

The assessment is said to independently measure and verify CO2 emissions from its container fleet, carried out by the classification society, according to Carbon Positive.

Jacob Sterling, head of climate and environment at Maersk, noted that the company wanted to make independent CO2 verification an industry standard to allow customers to make choices based on environmental performance.

The Lloyd's emissions verification was conducted via a desk assessment, Maersk's own 2009 measurement data and its internal collection and reporting processes, backed up by an onboard audit of the emissions reporting of the Maersk Clementine vessel.
