A ruling from the USDA has given the all clear for the importation of Jordanian strawberries.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service ruled that fruit subjected to one or more phytosanitary measures was safe for importation into the US.

The ruling is effective of 16 February and requires shipments are accompanied by certification stating the strawberries were grown in Jordan and are free of six pests deemed harmful to strawberry production.

One industry figure told Fruitnet.com, however, that Jordanian strawberries would need to be air freighted to the US and that he doubted they would be able to compete for market share with the country’s domestic crop.
