Chile’s fresh fruit industry is taking part in a pilot project that it claims will neutralize the carbon footprint of its participation at the recent Fruit Logistica trade fair in Berlin, Germany.

As part of an ongoing sustainability drive, the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association and the country’s promotional export bureau, ProChile, have signed up to a programme called CarbonZero, conducted through Landcare Research New Zealand.

The pilot initiative will see the carbon tonnage of all official Chilean delegates measured, as well as the output of the country’s national pavilion.

In a statement, the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association said the sector would “offset” the accumulated carbon footprint of its Berlin visit by acquiring “carbon bonds”, which it claimed would enable its participation at Fruit Logistica to be certified carbon neutral.
