Organically certified farmland in Western Australia (WA) will grow by 75 per cent over the next three years due to a rise in consumer demand, according to The West Australian.
WA’s 2,900ha of organic land will expand by another 2,200ha currently in the certification progress, which takes about three years.
The state’s share of the national 11m hectare total is small, but most of Australia’s organic land is set aside for grazing, and WA is the country’s second biggest producer of organic fruit after New South Wales.
The Australian Organic Market Report, commissioned by the Biological Farmers of Australia, says domestic demand for organic produce is heating up, following a global trend that’s seeing sales of organic fruit and vegetables limited only by production.
Australian sales of organic produce are worth A$578m, according to the report, which was released on Friday.
