Costa Rica bananas

Banana exports from Costa Rica to China fell 3.85 per cent year-on-year last month due to high transport costs and mounting competition from the Philippines, reports Freshfruitportal.com.

Costa Rican foreign trade agency Promer said banana volumes to China in May were down by 29,797 tonnes compared to the same time last year to 797,471 tonnes.

In value terms, exports fell from US$311m to US$299m, it said.

Costa Rican exporters hope China will diversify its banana supply to include increased volumes from Cost Rica once the two countries' free trade agreement comes into effect, the report said.
