Tucuman airport Argentina

The regional airport of Tucumán in Argentina – a major production zone for lemons and blueberries – is reportedly looking forward to the addition of a new coldstorage facility.

The upgrade is expected to “significantly improve” supply chain logistics from the northern Argentinean region, according to a report by La Gaceta.

The Tucumán Institute of Productive Development (IDEP) said it has fast-tracked all the necessary paperwork with the airport authority bring the facility into operation, according to IDEP executive director Juan Luis Fernández.

“We want to have permanent structures to not only to dispatch blueberries, but also other types of fruit and other products that require air transport,” Fernández told La Gaceta.

Fernández added that the new facility will allow producers and export companies to trade their products without the need for intermediary groups and ensure an unbroken cool chain.

Tucumán’s new air terminal coldstorage building measures 1,000m2 and features an additional 500m2 pre-cooling chamber to acclimatise the fruit.

Both chambers will be used to prepare fruit for two daily flights from the airport, the report said.
