Washington apples in crate

Apple growers in Washington State, US are expecting to record their third largest crop in the industry’s history at an estimated 104.3m cartons, an increase of 2.6m cartons from the forecast a month previously.

Despite earlier concerns about a late harvest, cold weather and a potential worker shortage, many more apples were harvested than initial projections indicated, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported.

However, according to data from the Yakima Valley Growers-Shippers Association and the Wenatchee Valley Traffic Association, this year’s crop will still be 5m cartons lower than the 109m carton harvest achieved in 2010.

The organisation’s storage report said the harvest, which is estimated from bins of fruit in storage, was also likely to be lower than 2008’s 108m carton crop.
