Belgian retailer Delhaize Group has published its first corporate responsibility report, entitled 'A healthy approach to life', highlighting the company's achievements and strategic properties in the areas of product, people and the planet.

For 'product', the group said that its top priority is to provide safe, healthy and high-quality foods at affordable prices, and has already introduced a pioneering nutritional navigation system at its US operating companies called Guiding Stars.

Delhaize Group's priorities in relation to 'people' is the 'personal and professional development' of its 138,000 associates, with a strong emphasis on health and wellness.

Energy conservation is a key part of the group's 'planet' focus, with Delhaize Belgium now the largest user of renewable energy in the country, the company reported.

'Throughout the group, we have hundreds of initiatives that come under the umbrella of corporate responsibility,' said Delhaize CEO Pierre-Olivier Beckers. 'However, until recently we've never really thought of these activities as a corporate responsibility, they are simply a natural expression of who we are... this is why operating as a responsible company is one of the three pillars of our business strategy, alongside generating profitable revenue growth and pursuing best-in-class execution.
