The European Commission has agreed to grant protected geographical indication (PGI) status to table grapes grown in the Italian region of Puglia that are marketed under the Uva di Puglia quality seal.

The decision, announced earlier this week in the Official Journal of the European Union – and due to come into force in mid-August – applies to a limited number of extra class and class one grapes that meet certain standards as defined by the Bari chamber of commerce.

Italy's application to register the name Uva di Puglia was originally published by the Commission on 15 October 2011.

Varieties included in the PGI scheme are Italia, Victoria, Michele Palieri, Regina and Red Globe, production of which is found in a total of 126 places around the south-east Italian region.
