Avocado production among members of Mexico’s Association of Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers (Apeam) in Michoacán, is forecast to rise by 6 per cent in 2012/13.

The total crop is estimated to reach 825,687,261 lbs or approximately 374,525 tonnes, Apeam told Americafruit.

Mexico exports the lion’s share of its avocados to the neighbouring US market where Mexico is the leading supplier and avocado consumption continues to rise.

But the North American nation also sends some of its avocados, albeit in smaller volume, to Europe and Asia.

Last season (2011/12), Apeam members distributed over 781m lbs (358,792 tonnes) of avocados in the US – an increase of more than 25 per cent on the previous campaign.

The association expects a continued expansion in sendings to the US this season, which kicks off in autumn, thanks to rising production in Mexico.

“We’re pleased to announce that there will be plenty of fruit to promote this fall as well as strong advertising support at impactful levels to help build awareness, increase usage and help retailers further drive demand in-store,” explained Eduardo Serena, Apeam’s marketing director.
