Wholesale vegetable prices in Taiwan have increased by around 70 per cent after a number of typhoons buffeted the island recently.

Statistics from the country’s Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) show the average price of vegetables in wholesale markets last month had increased to NT$38.8 (US$1.30) per kilogram - up 72.4 percent from NT$22.5 per kg during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the price of leafy vegetables increased by 88.5 percent over the same period to an average of NT$31.1 per kg as a result of the typhoons.

According to a Focus Taiwan report, the situation was expected to improve shortly. AFA director-general Lee Tsang-lang told the newspaper supplies of most leafy vegetables were expected to increase this week, while spring onion supplies would rise within the next two weeks.

Wholesale vegetable prices should return to around NT$30 per kg or lower within the week, he added. Average prices usually fall between NT$22 per kg and NT$24 per kg.
